Sue Westergaard
Sue trained in printed textiles and printmaking. A varied career followed, combining teaching with freelance work as a designer / maker.
Sue originally trained in printed textiles at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts. A varied career followed, marrying teaching with designing and making across the board for everything from graphics, to T-shirt design, to printing fabrics, to creating costume, sets and installations for theatre, public arts and festivals. She has even written a ‘how-to’ book about screen-printing on cloth for Crowood Press. An MA in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art began to change the focus of her practice, as did a later move to the Kent coast. Its no longer purely commercial or functional - more ‘art for arts sake’. It references the associations she’s had with textiles; traditions like print and repeat pattern are central to it, but things like cast concrete, plaster with layers of paint, wax and graphite have been added into the mix.
London born, she lives and works in the Whitstable area. She still plays with textile traditions like stitch and pattern, but with elements such as layers of painted colour or cast plaster thrown into the mix. No medium is out of bounds, as illustrated by these insights into her working process
We are delighted to have Sue as part of our Contemporary Kent Artists exhibition at The Horsebridge Arts Gallery on the 8th - 20th of October 2025.
'Yesterday I slashed holes in to an already painted canvas, following the lines of the drippy floral I'd already done on it. Then I painted on the reverse in an 'old ladies underwear pink' which bled through to the front, creating a sort of loose oval. I want the front and the back to be equally important '
'This week I've been tying knots and printing spots'
'Drawing Ghost-dresses. White acrylic marker pen, with vintage garments printed on top so it's all life sized - on black paper'
