‘ I am a local artist, and my work comes from ideas or themes that I am interested in developing, some are about the environment and nature, others are more political.
‘Almost out of the Sky’ is based on a poem by Pablo Neruda, from his book ‘Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair’ His poems are full of visual imagery and in ‘Almost out of the Sky’ I used visual references from David Hockney, Georgia O’Keefe and Caspar David Friedrich.
The piece ‘J M W Turner Art Changes Everything’ was based on a photo I took of some graffiti I saw spray painted on an old garage. It made me think about important artists who have changed the way we see things. Turner was the first artist to convey the sense of light, movement and atmosphere whilst still representing a scene. Others in this series included Tracey Emin and Bridget Riley.
The Maunsell Forts and Reculver Castle were part of a series about the coastline around Whitstable. The Tide Rushes Out and West Beach Sunset were in a series about the changing tides at West Beach. I spend time sketching and taking photographs and then create the composition using pen and ink with acrylic paint washes. I always sell my work as limited edition prints to ensure my work is accessible to a wide audience.
