Not all memories are ones we choose to remember. Despite 40 years of domestic abuse, my mother always took the side of my bullying step-father – with devastating consequences for family relationships. Her doctor explained that mum has been suffering for many years from Selective Amnesia… her brain has chosen to block memories of traumatic events as if they never happened. She refuses to be these memories. Thinking back, I realised that mum’s face always had a specific expression when distressing memories were being deleted - and this is the expression I’ve tried to capture in this work.
