Donald Smith

‘These paintings consist of fragments of paint and finely woven linen, jostling and oscillating to create a rhythmic matrix of colour, material, light and space. These circular fields of energy are a synthesis of experiences, sensations, actions and ideas. I live and work in one of a string of villages along the River Darent in North Kent, an area described by the 19th century artist, Samuel Palmer, as the ‘Valley of Vision’. The artworks have their own particular nature; they are containers for my ideas, colourful virtual spaces into which one can gaze, but also handmade objects in the material world. There is no ‘top’ or ‘bottom’ they can be hung anyway up; there is potential for change and continuous motion.’
