‘Mnemosyne III belongs to a series of works that take as their starting point Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas. Art historian Warburg (1866-1929) exploited what at the time was the novel potential of photographic reproduction to bring together and explore thematic resonances and connections between works of art from different periods and locations. There were multiple reflexivities in this methodology, which used images of images. Warburg was interested in the way that artists repeated earlier themes, but the process of photography itself added an extra layer of mirroring. In my Mnemosyne works I have re-composed some classic images, as indeed they have been recomposed many times before. The sources I have used are not the unique original paintings but their representations on museum postcards. The original “found” postcards are incorporated into these works.’
