Sally Barton

‘My work is mostly concerned with depicting the human figure, or groups of figures - exploring how these can form a cohesive and expressive whole whilst capturing the essential character of a face or gesture. I use sketches and photos as a basis for my work but draw from memory and feeling too - it is these things that inform the way I have approached the subjects, governing their composition, tone and expression.

‘Deckchairs with Figures’ is based on a momentary vision of a windblown terrace in Margate where girls and women were seated in groups, defying the cold and windy weather, with the blue stripes of the deckchairs weaving the moment into a unified image.’

We are delighted to have Sally as part of our Contemporary Kent Artists exhibition at The Horsebridge Arts Gallery the 8th - 18th of October 2026.
